Although some improvement in rainfall came in May of
2006, most of the area continued to be dry, and the month was again warmer than
normal for Central and South Central Texas.
May monthly rainfall ended
up showing more rain from the northeast to the southeast part
of the area, where some locations had near to slightly above normal rain for
May, while the west, northwest and southwest part of the area had below normal
rain for May.
Rainfall from late April 2006 carried over to the first 9 days
of May 2006, briefly improving the drought situation
that has been ongoing for a little more than a year,
since April of 2005. Rains returned the afternoon
and evening of the 14th, and at the end of the month from the 27th to 31st.

A brief summary of May weather events follows.
Severe weather events in May 2006 came on the 2nd,
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 29th and 30th.
May 2006 began with the promise of rains, as the
2nd to the 9th of the month had showers and thunderstorms in the area.
The
brief stormy and wet pattern began to
fade quickly around the 10th, yet a brief return of
thunderstorms came Sunday afternoon and evening the 14th.
The dry pattern came back the 15th. Two relatively robust
cold fronts moved through the area in May of 2006.
The first cold front was on the
10th,
and the second cold front arrived on the afternoon and evening of the 14th.
After the second cold front,
the week
of the 15th to 19th brought dry conditions,
with unusually low humidifies for May.
Extremes between daily lows and highs was observed. By the 19th
afternoon highs warmed to the upper 90s to near 100.
Southeasterly winds moderated daytimes highs the 20th and 21st,
and moisture increased to summer like levels the week of the
22nd to the 26th. Daily lows and highs were like
July and August. Afternoons began to heat up again
on the 27th to where they were on May 19th.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms returned the night of the 27th to early
morning of the 28th, and again in the day and afternoon of the 29th to
the 31st.
