In the dry period that has been ongoing over the area for the
past 15 months, since April 2005, total monthly rainfall for most places
across South Central Texas was below average in June 2006.
Even the record daily June 30th rain of 2.06 inches at
Del Rio on June 30th was not enough to push
Del Rio's monthly rain above average, as only 0.01
fell from the 1st to the 29th.
Like most of 2006, the gradient of rainfall from north, wetter,
to drier south, continued in June of 2006.
June 2006 was also warmer than usual for June.
The average monthly temperature was near 1 to 3 degrees
above the 1971 to 2000 normals for most locations, and ended up
mainly in the top third for the warmest
June of record. It was the 12th warmest June for Del Rio
since 1906, with 13 100 degree days. June 2006 was a tie
with 1971 for the 19th warmest June for San Antonio since 1885; and a tie with
1971 at Austin Bergstrom for the 32nd warmest
June since 1943. At Austin Mabry June 2006 tied with 1884, 1895, 1947 and 2001
for the 37th warmest June since 1854.
The warm temperatures for the first half of
2006 made the dryness more intense.
Since the beginning of record, June climatologically is the
3rd wettest at San Antonio 1885-2005; 4th wettest at Del Rio
1906-2005, and 5th wettest for the Austin Area, 1856 to 2005.
The latest 30 Year 1971 to 2000 Normals paint a little different
picture, showing the June as the wettest at Del Rio;
3rd wettest at Austin Mabry and Austin Bergstrom;
and 2nd wettest at San Antonio.

The warmth for the first half 2006 has also added
to the dryness, as
evaporation rates have been more than usual. The period
from January 1st to June 30th of 2006 has had the warmest average
temperature over that time span at San Antonio, since 1885;
the 2nd warmest at Austin Mabry, since 1854; a tie with
1950 and 1971 for the 9th warmest at Austin Bergstrom, since
1943; and a tie with 1953 for the 2nd warmest
January to June average temperature at Del Rio since 1906.

A brief summary of June weather events follows.
On June 1st scattered showers brought some relief from the drought,
and then drier weather followed Friday
the 2nd to the weekend of the 3rd and 4th.
As the subtropical high increased over the area,
much drier weather with very low humidity for June came
the
week of June the 5th to June the 10th.
The dryness and warmth increased the 11th to the 13th, with the 13th
and 14th ending up as the hottest days of the month.
Southerly winds on the 15th and 16th increased ahead of a rain making weather
system in the Rockies. The moderate to strong gulf breezes
caused afternoon highs
to moderate a few degrees the 15th and 16th.
Rain with thunderstorms followed night of the 16th/17th and 17th/18th,
as a series of rain making systems moved across the area from
the north.
Dry weather returned the 19th, then rains came back the 20th, 21st, and
over the east part of the area the 22nd.
Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms
came from the north again in the predawn hours of the 24th, and became
more isolated by the afternoon and early evening.
These showers and thunderstorms were associated with a
weak cool front that moved south of the area, and was followed
by another reinforcing weak cool front on Monday the 26th.
These cool fronts
made for cooler overnight lows and low relative humilities
for June. The coolest early morning lows for June 2006
came the 27th and 28th, with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s
over the Hill Country, near 60 to low 60s over parts of
Central Texas, and in the 60s over the east part of South Central
Texas to 70s near the Rio Grande.
Record lows were observed in the Austin Area. The low of
60 at Austin Bergstrom the 27th tied the daily record for
the 27th observed in 1968. The low of 61 at Austin Bergstorm
the 28th broke the record of 64 set June 28, 1974.
The
low of 63 June 28th at Austin Mabry tied the record low
for June 28th previously observed in 1916.
The month ended on the 29th and 30th with increasing
clouds and a weather pattern that was much more favorable
for showers. On June 30th, heavy rains fell
in Val Verde County, where Del Rio picked up 2.06 inches
of rain. This set a daily record rainfall for June 30th
at Del Rio, and boosted the monthly rainfall from 0.01
inches to 2.07 inches in one day.
In the ongoing drought that continued in June 2006,
the cumulative 12 month rainfall statistics continued to show
the dry trend, that began in March and April of 2005.
