January 2006 Weather in Review
|
January 2006 was unusually warm and dry for January, and the warmest January
many locations have seen in a while. January 2006 was the
warmest January for Austin Mabry, Del Rio and San Antonio since 1952.
At Austin Bergstrom, it was the warmest January since 1990.
Diurnal temperature ranges continued to be large,
typical of dry weather patterns. For
the first half of the month, Pacific Cold fronts that passed
through the area did little to cool daytime highs much, and mainly
impacted overnight lows, that cooled off more than usual in the
dry conditions. The second half of the month had cooler weather,
although conditions continued generally mild for January.
On January 16th, the first strong cold front
temperature wise came, leaving cooler highs the 17th.
A quick warmup the 18th to 20th, ended the night of the 20th,
Scattered rains came the weekend of the 21st and 22nd.
when another cold front came. Clouds and patchy light
rain in cool air made January 21st and January 22nd the coolest days
since December 16th and 17th for most locations.
Del Rio broke out of the clouds early on the 22nd, allowing
afternoon highs to warm into the 60s.
Another rain event came the night
of January 27th and morning of January 28th. Dry and mild
days followed the 29th to the 31st.
January 2006 had a number of warm afternoon highs. Mild air
masses that moved across the area and very low soil moisture,
contributed to the unusually warm January afternoons.
Soil moisture continues to be very low, as rainfall since
the spring and summer of 2005 has been much
lower than normal. From August 1st, 2005 to January 31st, 2006
it has been the 2nd driest August to January period at
San Antonio since 1885 and the 4th driest August to January
since 1948 at Austin Bergstrom. The average January highs for January 2006 was the warmest
of record at Austin, Del Rio and San Antonio.
