February 2006 Weather in Review

February ended up drier than usual for February, as the area continued in a severe drought. A few significant measures of rainfall deficits across the area showed up by Feburary 28th, 2006. In the past 50 to 60 years this has been one of the drier winters of record. From December 1st, 2005 to February 28th, 2006 this has been the 4th driest 90 day stretch for San Antonio from 1946 to 2006; the 3rd driest for Austin Bergstrom 1948 to 2006; the 12th driest for Austin Mabry/Mueller 1930 to 2006; and the 5th driest 90 day December 1st to February 28th for Del Rio from 1963 to 2006.

At San Antonio March 1st, 2005 to February 28th, 2006 is the 2nd driest March 1st to February 28th period from 1885 to 2006; the 6th driest for Austin Bergstrom from 1943 to 2006; and the 9th driest for Austin Mabry from 1856 to 2006.

At San Antonio from March 1st, 2005 to February 28, 2006, only 12.92 inches of rain has fallen.  This is the 2nd driest March 1st, to February 28th period from 1885 to 2006.

February 2006 brought more extremes in temperature and moisture than January. The coldest weather since early to mid December 2005 came in February, and one stretch of cold days from the 18th to the 19th established some record low or cold daily highs at Austin and San Antonio.

After a warm beginning, it turned cooler in the day of Friday the 10th, then colder Saturday February 11th. Lows dropped to the teens in the hill country to 20s over South Central Texas on the 12th. The night was nearly as cold for lows on the 13th, as lows in the 20s to near 30 prevailed. After a warming trend that sent highs into the 80s on the 16th, much colder weather came the 17th.

A cloudy, cold weekend came the 18th and 19th, with winter precipitation falling over parts of the area on the evening of the 18th and night to early morning of the 19th.

It slowly warmed up the following week with only light precipitation, a 2 mornings of fog on February 21st and 22nd. A period of rain the night of the 24th and day of the 25th helped the dryness some, and was the best rain for the area since October and the night of  November 25 to early morning November 26.

AUSTIN...

Austin/Bergstrom International Airport:

The average February temperature was 52.9 degrees, 2.6 degrees below normal. The average high was 67.0 and the average low was 38.8. Heating degree days 342 and Cooling degree days 13. The highest temperature was 84 on the 28th, and the lowest was 23 on the 12th. Highest wind gust was 46 mph from the north with a cold front on the 17th. Rainfall was 1.06 inches, 0.96 inches below normal. Rainfall for 2006 from January 1st to February 28th, 2006... 1.68 inches or 2.55 inches below normal.

Austin Mabry:

The average February temperature was 54.6 degrees equal to the 1971-2000 average for February. The average high was 65.8 and the average low was 43.3. Heating degree days 302 and Cooling degree days 16. The highest temperature reached 83 on the 28th, and the lowest was 28 on the 18th and 19th. Highest wind gust was 31 mph from the north, northwest with a cold front on the 11th. Rainfall was 0.89 inches, 1.10 inches below normal. Rainfall for 2006 from January 1st to February 28th, 2006... 2.69 inches, 1.19 inches below normal.

DEL RIO...

The average February temperature was 56.4 degrees, 0.3 degrees above normal. The average high was 70.5, and the average low was 42.2. Heating degree days 247 and cooling degree days 14. The highest temperature reached 87 on the 16th and 28th. The lowest was 24 on the 12th. The highest wind gust was 38 mph from the west, northwest with a cold front on the 10th. Rainfall was 0.04 inches, 0.92 inches below normal. This tied with February 1926 for the 13th driest February at Del Rio from 1906 to 2006. Rainfall for 2006 from January 1st to February 28th, 2006... 0.36 inches or 1.24 inches below normal.

SAN ANTONIO...

The average February temperature was 55.9 degrees, 1.2 degrees above normal. The average high was 69.6, and average low was 42.2. Heating degree days 263 and cooling degree days 17. The highest temperature reached 85 on the 2nd. The lowest was 23 on the 12th, the coldest low for San Antonio since March 2002. Highest wind gust was 37 mph from the north with the 2 strongest cold fronts of the month on the 10th and 17th. Rainfall was 0.62 inches, 1.13 inches below normal. Rainfall for from January 1st to February 28th, 2006... 0.97 inches or 2.44 inches below normal.
