Early Spring Weather Extremes
Early Spring weather variations are rather common, and
a few of the extreme ones have been noted here, in cases of conditions going
from extremely warm to extremely cold for the season and then the reverse,
extremely cold to extremely warm for early Spring.
In 1928
extreme temperatures went from hot in late March to cold
in early April. Although the 1928 case is not uncommon
generally to go
from hot to cold in early Spring, it stands
out in the records as extreme specifically.
In 1928 extreme warm late
March weather that affected the area was
followed by extreme cold weather in
early April. For Del Rio, on March 28, 1928 the
high was 103, an All-Time March high.
Although they were record highs
in 1928 for March 28th at Austin and San Antonio,
the high of 88 at Austin and 92
at San Antonio was broken in later years.
Just 3 days earlier, March 25, 1928, the highs reached
94 at Austin; 95 at San Antonio; and 93 at Del Rio. On April 8th and
9th, 1928 more winter like conditions affected the area. Still today the
highs of 47 in Del Rio on April 9th, 1928; 44 at Austin
April 9, 1928 (also 44 at Austin April 8th, 1938);
and 45 at San Antonio on
April 8 and 9, 1928, stand as the Coldest
Daytime Highs for any April day, just after
the summer like conditions in late March of 1928.
The high of 44 at Austin April 9, 1928, was 50 degrees
below the high of 94 March 25, 1928. At
Del Rio the high of 47 April 9, 1928 was 56
degrees below the 103 All-Time March High on March 28, 1928.
At San Antonio the high of 45 April 8 and 9, 1928, was
50 degrees below the high of 95 March 25, 1928.
Although the 1928 case is not uncommon generally to go
from hot to cold in early Spring, it stands
out in the records as extreme specifically.
The All-Time March high for any March day in
San Antonio was 100 March 6, 1991 and March 28, 1971.
For the Austin City climate location, now Austin Mabry,
the All-Time March high was 98 March 28, 1971.
At Austin Bergstrom the hottest March day of record
was 98 on March 6, 1991 and March 22, 1971.
The extremes from cold to hot also can happen quickly,
and are not uncommon in early Spring for the region.
In the past 15
years, 2 events in April stand out, one in 1987
and another in 1996, where unseasonably cool conditions were followed by
unseasonably warm weather.
In late March and
early April of 1987 unseasonably cold weather came to
the area, and then was followed by unseasonably warm in Mid April 1987. A low
of 31 on April 3, 1987 at San Antonio
was the latest freeze and All-Time April low of record.
Lows April 3, 1987
at the Austin City Climate station was 37; 35 at
Austin Bergstrom and 33 at Del Rio. Two weeks later
the high rose to 90 at Austin Bergstrom April 17th; 93 at the
Austin City Climate location April 17th; 95 at San Antonio
April 17th; and 96 at Del Rio April 16th and 17th.
In 1996 a cold early April outbreak kept daytime highs
April 5th at 59 for the Austin City Climate location; 58 at Del Rio;
and 60 at San Antonio. Two weeks later highs rose to
95 April 18 and 97 April 19 at Austin; to 97 April 18
and 100 April 19 at Del Rio; and to 97 April 18 and 101 April 19 at San Antonio.
The April 19, 1996
San Antonio high of 101 was an All-Time April High for San Antonio.
