August 2006 - Dry and Hot

1. August Summary

The summer of 2006 was the hottest summer for South Central Texas since 1998, 1994 and 1980. Consistently Dry and Hot conditions summarizes August 2006. August 2006 was the warmest All-Time Month and August at San Antonio, and the warmest August at Austin Mabry. August 2006 was the 9th warmest August at Austin Bergstrom; and the 16th warmest at Del Rio. August 2006 was also unusually dry, as the area continued in the ongoing drought since the late winter and early spring of 2005. August 2006 was the 7th driest August at San Antonio; 17th driest at Austin Mabry; and the 3rd driest at Austin Bergstrom. The average daily temperature was 2.2 to near 4 degrees above average, and this degree of warmth only added to the dryness.

The warmth from the Winter and Spring through this Summer has only added to the dryness, as the area continued in an ongoing drought since the late Winter/early Spring of 2005. The rainfall perspective from September 1st to August 31st continued to show dry patterns.

Since September 1st of 2005 to August 31...2006 San Antonio had only 13.43 Inches of rain. This was the 3rd Driest September 1st to August rainfall periods since 1885.

From September 1st of 2005 to August 31, 2006, Austin Mabry had 25.92 inches and Del Rio 15.11 inches of rain. These amounts were not in the top 10 driest September 1st to August rainfall periods for Austin Mabry or Del Rio.

3. Year 2006 sets records for warmth

More than usual 100 degree days have shown up in 2006, and they began early. Del Rio had 3 100 degree days in April and May, while San Antonio had 1 100 degree day in April. The heat came on in June, was interrupted for several days in the beginning of July, then returned strong around July 5th to the 19th and 20th. Daytime highs then moderated, yet the heat returned July 28th, and the trend continued for August 2006.

A review of Year 2006 shows the year warm right out of the gate in early January, and overall the winter was very mild. 90 degree days came early in March and 100 degree days came early in April. This was not unusual considering the mild winter and very dry conditions.
In looking at 2006 from January to August, Year 2006 is so far the warmest at San Antonio since 1885; the 2nd warmest at Austin Mabry since 1854; and the 3rd warmest for Del Rio since 1906.

Austin Mabry:
The average August temperature was 88.5 degrees, 4.0 degrees above normal, and the warmest August of Record. The average high was 100.7 and the average low was 76.3. Heating degree days 0 and Cooling degree days 739. The highest temperature reached 104 on the 16th, 24th and 26th. The lowest was 67 on the 31st. Highest wind gust was 28 mph from the east with thunderstorms on the 7th. Rainfall was 0.22 inches, 2.09 inches below normal.
