March 2004 Weather in Review
March 2004 was warmer than normal.
Extreme cold outbreaks did not come
in March 2004, as has happened in
earlier years. Several cold fronts
moved into the area; however, the
main features of March 2004 fronts
was additional rainfall. Rainfall
over Central and South Central Texas in March 2004
was quite varied with very wet conditions
over the west part of South Central Texas and dry
conditions at some locations in the
eastern parts of Central and South Central Texas.
Much wetter than normal rainfall fell
from the Rio Grande to parts of Llano, Gillespie,
Kerr, Medina, and Frio Counties.
These locations were
closer to the rain making storm track
during March.
Rainfall 3 to 5 times more than normal fell
over parts of Val Verde, Edwards, Kinney, Maverick, Real,
Dimmit, Zavala, Medina, Bandera, Western Frio, and
Western Kerr
Counties. At Del Rio March 2004 was the wettest March of Record
with 3.48 inches, breaking the previous
wettest March of record, 3.20 inches, set in March of 1990.
From Burnet, Blanco, Kendall, Bexar and
Atascosa Counties, and going east to Williamson,
Travis, Lee, Fayette and Lavaca counties,
rainfall varied from above normal to below normal for March. The driest
areas were over parts of Lee, Fayette,
Gonzales, Bastrop, and Caldwell Counties, where rainfall
was below normal.
Rainfall varied considerably over parts
of Williamson, Travis, Hays, Comal, Guadalupe,
Wilson, Atascosa, Bexar, Kendall, Blanco,
and Burnet Counties.
Weaker than usual cold fronts, more cloudy days than
usual, and weather patterns that did not bring very
warm and dry conditions to the area from the west,
kept temperature variations
for March in a narrow range for the
month. It was more like April and May instead of
typical for March. March 2004 had more mostly cloudy
days than usual, similar to March of 1974, 1978, 1979,
1986, 1992, 1993, and 1994.
Freezes were absent also in March. The last
time freezing temperatures affected parts of
Central and South Central Texas was February 27th.
Overall March 2004 tied with March of 1963 and
March of 1994 for the 10th warmest March of Record
at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
At Austin Mabry, March 2004 tied for the
6th warmest March of record with March of 1904, 1935,
and 1974. Even though it was the wettest March of
Record at Del Rio, March 2004 was the 9th warmest
March of Record at Del Rio.
For San Antonio, March 2004 ended up a tie with
March of 1929 and 1933, for the 18th warmest
March of Record.
March began with partly cloudy conditions on
Monday the 1st, followed by cloudy days the 2nd and 3rd.
A line of showers and thunderstorms moved across
the area on Thursday the 4th, giving way to
clearing skies late in the day. A stretch
of mostly sunny days followed the March 4th
storms, and lasted until the 10th. This was
the longest stretch of dry weather for the month.
Cloudier conditions came on the 11th and 12th, and most
of the rest of March was mostly cloudy until
the 30th and 31st, when sunny and pleasant days
made for ideal weather conditions for outside
activities.
The most rain for the month came from the 12th to
the 15th. The 11th began as a mostly sunny
day and then turned cloudier in the afternoon
as showers and thunderstorms formed from the
west and north. Rainy days followed the 12th
through the 14th and continued on Monday the
15th. Heavy rains fell over parts of Uvalde,
Edwards, Real, Bandera, Val Verde and Medina Counties.
Lingering rains on the 16th stayed over the
north part of South Central Texas, where
Austin and Del Rio picked up light rain.
The 17th was a partly cloudy and mild day,
and like the 7th, 30th, and 31st, one of the warmer days
of the month. Cloudier days followed
the 18th to the 21st. Scattered showers
affected the area the 20th and 21st,
and were more numerous over the west
part of the area, near the Rio Grande. A partly cloudy
day on the 22nd, was followed by cloudier
weather Tuesday the 23rd through part of the day of
Monday the 29th. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms along a cold front
moved across the area in the early
morning through early afternoon of
Monday the 29th. Skies cleared during
the day from the north.
In wake of the March 29th cold front and
scattered rains, mostly sunny days finished
off the month on the 30th and 31st.
March 2004 was mild for March, ending up
warmer than normal. Strong cold outbreaks
that were common in 2002 and 2003 was
absent this year. Freezes were not
observed in the month either. No unusually warm March
days came either in the month. On the
7th Uvalde reached 90, with 80s over the
rest of the area. On the 30th and 31st
mostly clear days and mild conditions allowed
for afternoon highs to reach the 80s.
On the 31st, the warmest day of the month
came for parts of Central Texas and the
eastern part of South Central Texas.
