June 2004 Weather in Review

Even though June is climatologically one of the wetter months for the area, June 2004 was stormier and wetter than normal for June. June 2004 was not only wet for South Central Texas, it was also wet for other parts of Texas and also for Louisiana and Mississippi. The remarkable phenomina this year was that a lot of rain fell over a large area without the help of any organizied tropical system. The active and slow moving southern stream June 2004 westerlies, that allowed low pressure systems aloft to stall at times, combined with deep moisture, contributed to the wet June weather.

Since 1895, June 2004 was the 3rd wettest June overall for the State of Texas, according to data provided by the Southern Region Climate Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Southern Region Climate Center calculated that the average rainfall statewide for Texas in June 2004 was 6.26 inches. The wettest June overall for Texas was in 1899, when the statewide average rainfall was 6.76 inches. June 2004 was the 3rd wettest June for the State of Louisiana and the wettest June of record for the State of Mississippi.

June 2004 was the 2nd wettest June of record at Austin Bergstrom International Airport; the 3rd wettest June of record at San Antonio International Airport; and the 4th wettest June of record at Austin Mabry. Some of the heavier rainfall amounts across South Central Texas were as follows: 2 miles north of Hallettsville 15.33 inches; Tarpley 15.02 inches; 8 miles south, southeast of Austin 14.85 inches; Poteet 14.52 inches; Blanco 14.41 inches; Kendalia 14.36 inches; Austin Bergstrom International Airport 14.18 inches; Kingsbury 13.83 inches; San Marcos Airport 13.96 inches; Luling 13.71 inches; Harper 13.66 inches; Dime Box 13.26 inches; Fedor 13.09 inches; 1 mile northeast of Medina 13.22 inches; New Braunfels Municipal Airport 13.00 inches; Wimberley 12.57 inches; New Braunfels 12.44 inches; Austin Mabry 11.41 inches; San Antonio International Airport 9.47 inches; 10 Miles North of Vanderpool 8.90 inches; Georgetown Airport 8.77 inches; Hondo Airport 7.51 inches; and San Antonio Stinson Field 6.64 inches. Rainfall was not as high for the west part of South Central Texas, where Del Rio had 2.28 inches. The average temperature ended up a little cooler than normal over the east part of the area, and near normal over western sections of the area, where less rain fell.

June 2004 began with summer like weather, a carry over from the heat on May 31st, Memorial Day. A wetter than usual pattern began on the night of the 2nd and early morning of the 3rd, as showers and thunderstorms moved across the area from the north and northeast, the result of a complex of storms that had been over North Texas. Another line of storms from North Texas moved over northern parts of South Central Texas in the late night of the 4th and early morning of the 5th.

From June 7th to 9th, the rains increased dramatically. More unstable conditions came June 7th, as scattered showers and thunderstorms moved from the south in the late morning and afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms returned the 8th, moving from south to north, and dropping locally heavy rains. A Flood came the night of the 8th and during the day of the 9th of June. On the night of the 8th and morning of the 9th, very heavy rains developed over the Texas Hill Country. Around 9 inches of rain fell at Medina in Bandera County the night of the 8th and early morning of the 9th. The heavy rains increased in the day of the 9th, causing more widespread flooding from Medina County and the Texas Hill Country to San Antonio, New Braunfels, Austin and to eastern parts of South Central Texas. In the afternoon of the 9th, very heavy rains formed from just south of San Antonio to south of Seguin, and moved north to New Braunfels in the mid to late afternoon. Rainfall amounts between 5 to 10 inches fell in 2 to 6 hours. The heavy rains moved northeast toward Austin, causing heavy rains in the Austin Area.

On Thursday the 10th, more stable conditions prevailed, although isolated showers formed over the eastern part of the area in the late morning and afternoon. On Friday the 11th, scattered showers and thunderstorms formed again in the morning, and thinned out some by the late afternoon, as they were driven mostly by daytime heating. The 12th began in a similar fashion with less showers, and this changed later in the day. Showers and thunderstorms increased over Val Verde County in the evening and moved east across parts of South Central Texas in the late evening of the 12th and early morning hours of the 13th.

On Monday the 14th, scattered showers and thunderstorms moved in from the south, dropping locally heavy rains in the late afternoon and causing 30 to 40 mph wind gusts. The activity went away in the evening, then returned the next day, Tuesday the 15th over the eastern part of South Central Texas. On Thursday the 17th, scattered afternoon to early evening showers and thunderstorms developed again. Partly cloudy weather prevailed from June 18th to the 20th.

By the evening of the 21st, the rains, with showers and thunderstorms increased over the area from the west and north. From June 22 to June 30, a wet, rainy period prevailed. Several waves of rain, heavy at times, came from showers and thunderstorms. This brought flooding to the area. A line of showers and thunderstorms came across the area in the early morning of the 22nd, bringing not only heavy rains, also frequent bright lightning displays, and gusty winds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms returned the 23rd and 24th. Heavy rain events followed on the 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th. Widespread rains came the last 2 days of the month, on the 29th and 30th. During the rainy period late in the month, some of the thunderstorms caused strong gusty winds. A wind gust of 58 mph occurred at Austin Bergstrom International Airport on the 27th.

June 2004 was a wet June for the history books. At Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the month ended as the 2nd wettest June of Record, October 1942 to Present, with 14.18 inches of rain, 10.76 inches above normal, for the month. At Austin Mabry June 2004 was the 4th wettest June of Record, 1856 to Present, with 11.41 inches of rain, 7.60 inches above noraml.
