100 Degree Days Come Quickly after the First 90 Degree Days

The first 100 Degree Days in 2004 came quickly after the first 90 degree days. It took until late May for many locations over South Central Texas to reach the 1st 90 Degree Day this year. The first 100 degree day of the year came quickly to some locations, in less than 10 days, on May 30th and May 31st. This phenomina is rare for the period of time from the late 19th century to the present, especially since it came after a rainy period in the winter and spring, and in a period of below normal temperatures.

On Sunday May 30th, afternoon highs rose to 106 at Del Rio and Langtry. The high of 106 at Del Rio the 30th tied the record high, previously set in 1979, for May 30th. This was the first 100 degree day for the year, occurring for Del Rio just 8 days after reaching the first 90 Degree Day on May 22, 2004, the lastest First 90 Degree Day of Record. Daytime highs on the 31st set records at several locations. The high of 104 at San Antonio, was a record high for the entire Month of May, and also a daily record high for May 31st. It was also the first 100 degree day in San Antonio this year, coming only 4 days after the first 90 Degree Day for 2004 on May 27th. The high of 107 at Del Rio was a daily record high for May 31st at Del Rio, and 2 degrees short of the May Monthly High of 109 set May 24, 2000. At Austin Mabry the high of 100 was the first 100 Degree Day high for the year, and came only 6 days after the first 90 Degree Day on May 25. The 100 degree high at Austin Mabry was also a record daily high for the Austin City Climate location, Austin Mabry, for May 31st. At Austin Bergstrom the May 31st, 2004 high was 99, one degree short of the record daily May 31st high of 100 on May 31, 1998. The hot, summer like temperatures, and extreme records on May 31st, came after prolonged periods of cooler than normal weather that affected the area in the early and mid part of May.

May 2004 could be described as a May that brought extremes from calm weather to stormy weather, and extremes in temperature for the month of May.

Austin Mabry:

Earliest 100 Degree Day in a Calendar Year: 100 on May 4, 1984. Earliest 100 Degree Day in 2004: 100 on May 31, 2004. The High of 100 on May 31st was a Daily Record High for Austin. The All-Time May Record High for the Austin City Climate location was 104 May 25, 1925.

Austin Bergstrom:

Earliest 100 Degree Day in a Calendar Year: 101 on February 21, 1996. Hottest Day in 2004 for January 1 to May 31, 2004: 99 on May 31, 2004. The Daily Record High for Austin Bergstrom for May 31st is 100 on May 31, 1998. The All-Time May Record High for the Austin Bergstrom is 102 May 7, 1998.

Del Rio:

Earliest 100 Degree Day in a Calendar Year: 100 on March 16, 1908. Earliest 100 Degree Day in 2004: 106 on May 30, 2004. The 107 Degree High on May 31st was a Daily Record at Del Rio for May 31st. The All-Time May Record High for Del Rio was 109 May 24, 2000.

San Antonio:

Earliest 100 Degree Day in a Calendar Year: 100 on February 21, 1996 Earliest 100 Degree Day in 2004: 104 on May 31, 2004. The 104 high at San Antonio May 31st was an All-Time Record May High for San Antonio of Record. The previous All-Time Record High for San Antonio was 103 May 28, 1927 and also 103 May 25, 1989.
