              HEAT WAVE....

BEWARE OF THE SUN

While most everyone loves a sunny day it is important to remember too much sunshine can be very DANGEROUS !!!

While southern New Mexico and far western Texas are popular vacation areas due to the warm sunny climate of the region, too much  exposure to the sun and heat can be hazardous to your health. El Paso Texas and much of the surrounding deserts reach temperatures of 100o or higher an average of 15 times a year with most lowland areas exceeding  90 at least 100 or more days during a typical late spring and summer season. During the the summer monsoon period, the increase in the relative humidity combines with the heat to create oppressive conditions. The hot and and sometimes humid weather can be extremely stressful to the human body and will cause heat disorders, heat related illnesses and even death.  At least 6 people died from heatstroke across El Paso, Texas,  during June 2002 when there were 18 days above 100 for the month.

But even when the temperatures are not considered hot, people should avoid too much exposure to the sun, especially here in the southwest. Because of the higher elevations in this area of the country, the atmosphere is thinner and provides less protection or shielding from
the sun's ultra-violet rays. Thus even when temperatures seem mild, severe sunburn is possible.
