WINTER 2000-2001...BE PREPARED BEFORE THE STORMS STRIKE !!!!

REMEMBER...DANGEROUS WINTER STORMS AND RELATED HAZARDOUS WEATHER CAN AND DO HAPPEN ACROSS SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO AND WESTERN TEXAS... ESPECIALLY OVER THE MOUNTAINS.

DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER ELEMENTS

HEAVY SNOW...Snow may fall at rates greater than 3 inches per hour blocking roads and leaving travelers stranded where no assistance is available. Rural areas may also become isolated without access to food, supplies or medical help.

BLIZZARDS AND BLOWING SNOW...The combination of strong winds and even light amounts of falling snow can greatly restrict vision and visibility. This can make driving extremely hazardous or even impossible. In addition...persons traveling on foot in blizzard conditions can become lost and stranded with the possibility of exposure or frostbite.

FREEZING RAIN...Although they are infrequent over southern New Mexico and western Texas, there have been instances of ice storms or freezing rain over the region. During these events, heavy accumulations of ice will cause power lines to collapse, resulting in the loss of electricity and telephone service. Roads become extremely slippery causing very dangerous driving conditions.

EXTREME COLD...Temperatures can fall rapidly and can plummet well below ZERO degrees F during the winter months...even in the lowest elevations of the region. Prolonged exposure to the cold will result in frostbite, hypothermia and possibly death.
