| Hail
Thunderstorms occasionally produce hail greater than an inch in diameter across southern New Mexico and far western Texas. Large hail can be destructive, destroying crops and damaging buildings and motor vehicles. For example, on May 21, 1991 hail the size of golf balls heavily damaged cars and buildings across El Paso, Texas and destroyed cotton and onion crops around area farms, causing almost 7 million dollars worth of damage. Also in May, 1999 hail the size of baseballs was reported over Tularosa, New Mexico in Otero County. |
