The Tower Erection

(group 2)

Here, the crew is just beginning the work of constructing the actual radar tower. Each section stands five meters in height (almost 15 ft). Our radar stands six sections high. pic 1

pic 2 Further along in the tower erection phase of the Doppler construction. Workers tether themselves to the structure and guide each piece to its proper place and bolt the components together. These guys act like it's natural to be walking along narrow beams at 100 foot above the ground (and...look mom no net!).

With the first five sections now complete, the tower stands above everything else on the mesa west of El Paso. The "thing" extending through the center of the tower and above it, is the waveguide; which transports the radar signals from the radar pulse generator to the radar dish and back. One more section will be built (on the ground) and raised to the top and bolted on. pic 3
