The Radome Puzzle

(group 4)

Radome construction just underway. Workers are piecing together the individual panels that comprise the structure. The pieces are made of a fiberglass composite and are bolted together. Notice how big this is going to be by comparing it with the truck just to its left. pic 1

pic 2 ...a little more than half-way completed! At this point the workers are relying on scaffolding that rolls around the inside of the ball to get to each ascending level. Now, the workers must work until the dome is complete because any strong winds at this point would be bad, as the uncompleted ball is flimsy.

Almost complete...and almost sunset. As workers lose light, they finish bolting the few remaining panels in place. You have to wonder what the jackrabbits and coyotes think of this new alien intruder into their desert landscape. pic 3

pic 4 The next morning...and this lucky guy gets to spend much of his day dangling on the surface of this ball caulking the joints. With the high cost and high tech nature of the equipment that will reside inside...it's good to keep the weather out. Here is another great opportunity to see just how big this dome is.
