The Radome Raising

(group 5)

Before raising the dome, the pedestal must be put in place on the platform at the top of the tower. The pedestal is the critical piece of equipment that holds the radar dish and drives it through its 360 degree sweeps and also elevates it for scans at different levels. In addition to raising the pedestal, the radar dish, itself, is also lifted to the platform. At this point, the dish is tightly packaged in wedge-shaped sections because the radome would not fit down over it. pic 1

pic 2 Now the much anticipated moment...The lifting of the Radome to rest atop the tower. For this, again, a calm day was required. As at many other offices...much ado was made of the event and numerous media were on hand to witness the feat.

This picture...taken from atop the upper air building...looks due west at the activity. Notice the enormous length of the boom on the crane to be able to get the height needed to clear the pedestal and tower. pic 3

pic 4 Almost up there now. A few of the many onlookers and journalist can be see viewing the process from a safe distance. Of course, we were happy to see ourselves get air-time on all three of the local television stations on the evening news.

Just about there. The dome finds itself home, atop the tower, looking over the desert just west of El Paso. Here, again, workers are up there on the platform to secure the dome to the tower. pic 5
