SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
REFERENCE: WSOM Chapters C-40, C-42, C-44
ISSUED BY: All warning offices
PURPOSE: The SPS is a multi-use product which has applications in the severe weather, winter weather, and non-precipitation areas. In a severe weather situation, the SPS header is used for hazardous weather outlooks issued by designated offices. During times of winter weather, the SPS should be used to provide winter weather outlooks (i.e., winter weather possible beyond 48 hours) and to disseminate updated synoptic-scale information regarding a winter weather event. Short term forecasts should be used to document the development and movement of smaller-scale precipitation features. Non-precipitation outlooks may be issued under the SPS header for events which are possible beyond the third or fourth forecast period.
CHANGES: No significant programmatic changes have taken place in the past year.
COMMENTS: As indicated above, the SPS should be issued only as an outlook for winter, non-precipitation, or severe weather events. The SPS may be used as a summary product during winter weather or non-precipitation events, but ONLY to describe synoptic-scale features. Any mesoscale or storm scale elements should be described using the NOW, SVS, and/or FFS.
