FLASH FLOOD WATCH

PRODUCT:  Flash Flood Watch (FFA)

REFERENCE: WSOM Chapter E-20, Section 5

ISSUED BY:  All warning offices

PURPOSE:  The FFA is a notification that current and developing hydrometeorological conditions are favorable for flash flooding (see WSOM E-20 section 2).  However, the occurrence of flooding is neither certain nor imminent.

CHANGES:  There have been no programmatic changes to the flash flood watch program in recent years.

COMMENTS: The FFW should be issued when conditions are favorable for heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding.  Besides the required communications and MND header information, FFAs shall contain the name of the issuing office, the valid time of the watch, and the affected geographic areas.  The watch area should be described in terms of well-known river basins, counties, or portions of states.  Expected extent and severity of the event should be described and, since flash flood safety is a major concern, call-to-action statements should appear in the watch message.
