Lightning Safety Awareness Week

June 20-26, 2004

Lightning is the second leading cause of storm related deaths in the United States behind floods. It accounts for more deaths than tornadoes or hurricanes. Texas is second only to Florida in lightning related deaths over the past 44 years. Click the link to see a complete graph of lightning related deaths in the United States. But the real story of lightning isn't the deaths, it's the injuries. Only about 10% of those struck are killed; 90% survive. But many of the survivors suffer devastating life-long severe injury. Lightning Safety Awareness Week is a week dedicated to informing the public of the danger of lightning. Following a few safety guidlines during a thunderstorm could save your life! Test your skills by taking our Lightning Safety Quiz.

While some areas of the country receive more thunderstorms than others, all states have some threat of lighting. Lightning also causes about $5 billion of economic loss each year in the U.S. It is your responsibility to stay informed and be safe during thunderstorms. Fortunately, most of these lightning deaths and injuries are easily avoided. Remember, NO PLACE OUTSIDE IS SAFE NEAR A THUNDERSTORM!

The vast majority of lightning casualties can be avoided, if only people knew what to do. Lightning Safety Awareness Week is a great opportunity to learn about lightning safety. This year, the event is June 20-26 2004. More information is available at www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov
