Hurricane Awareness Tour a Smashing Success!
Hundreds Visit Aircraft and Crew that Fly into Dangerous Storms

2010 Hurricane Preparedness Season Kicks Off in Brownsville

Children of all ages from Brownsville and Vicinity had the rare opportunity to step into the world of Hurricane Hunters and other scientists who journey into the heart of one of nature’s most powerful phenomena on Monday, April 26th, 2010. On a nearly perfect sun–drenched day, students from a half dozen private and parochial schools were treated to a full tour of everything hurricane, starting with a presentation by National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley meteorologists about hurricanes and their hazards of inland flooding, storm surge, wind, and tornadoes. The presentation was followed by a tour of the aircraft, where the dedicated professionals of NOAA’s Hurricane Team discussed how the aircraft is flown into and around theses storms (and survives!), the data collected and research conducted by scientists on board, and how the data are used by NOAA’s National Hurricane Center to inform the public on which way the storm is headed, how strong the storm is getting, and when the storm might reach land. The tour ended with a walk through of the exhibitor hangar, where a variety of commercial, non–profit, and government employers provided information on hurricane awareness and preparedness as the 2010 season approaches.

Following the school children, the general public was invited to visit the aircraft during the afternoon. Hundreds of local residents took advantage of the opportunity, and had their turn aboard the Lockheed Orion WP–3D Aircraft, affectionately known as "Kermit". The National Weather Service in Brownsville would like to thank the community of Brownsville and others in the Lower Rio Grande Valley for their support of this stop on the Gulf Coast Awareness Tour!
