A strong upper-level jet stream was located over the central and northeastern part of the country on Friday 25 October 1996. Some of the 200-mb raw data over Ohio and Pennsylvania indicated wind speeds of 160 - 190 knots! This satellite note #1 will briefly discuss the sharp edge to the cirrus clouds associated with the jet stream, and will include a few NWP gridded fields from PC-GRIDDS, including Q vectors. Information from the text book entitled Images in Weather Forecasting regarding satellite depiction of jet streams will also be presented.
