County Warning Area

NWS County Warning and Forecast Areas. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has forecast, long and short term watch/warning/advisory responsibility for central Alabama and parts of south Alabama. This is known as a County Warning and Forecast Area, CWFA. The graphic below shows the County Warning and Forecast Area of the Birmingham office in red. The graphic also shows County Warning and Forecast Areas for adjacent offices.

Watches

Watches issued by the Birmingham office include Winter Storm, Flash Flood, and High Wind watches.

The Storm Prediction Center, or SPC, issues Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado watches for the conterminous United States.


Warnings and Advisories

Short fuse warnings issued for our Forecast/County Warning Area would include Severe Thunderstorm, Tornado, and Flash Flood. Examples of long term warnings include Winter Storm, Blizzard, Ice Storm, High Wind, and Freeze. Advisories would include Dense Fog, Wind, Windchill and Heat advisories.
