Smoke Plume Detected on the WSR-88D October 2, 1997

The highly sensitive detection capabilities of the WSR-88D were shown on Thursday October 2, 1997. The radar near the Shelby County Airport displayed the smoke plume from a fire that occurred in the downtown Birmingham area. The smoke plume originated at a point approximately 25 miles north northeast of the radar site.

Some of the reflectivity values have been filtered out for better viewing. You will also notice over northern Bibb county, another smaller, weaker echo. Due to the filtering to show the plume across Jefferson county, this plume does not show up as well. There was a fire occurring in a wooded area over northern Bibb county.
