National Weather Service meteorologists surveyed damage across southern Sumter County and assessed damage that was consistent with a tornado.  An EF-2 tornado briefly touched down in Whitfield and moved northeastward, lifting just north of County Road 42.  Along the short damage path, approximately 250 softwood trees were snapped and 50 hardwood trees were uprooted.  Six homes and one double wide trailer were damaged, along with five outbuildings.  Another home was destroyed along County Road 42, where one injury occurred.
