Central Alabama Freeze Facts

Spring officially started on March 20th, but that doesn't mean Mother Nature has to comply. In fact, most locations across Central Alabama saw freezing temperatures on the morning of March 26th. Unfortunately, a lot of vegetation had already begun to bloom and was likely killed or damaged by this late cold snap.

As part of normal procedure, the National Weather Service in Birmingham issues frost advisories and freeze watches/warnings to coincide with the end of the growing season in the fall and the beginning of the next growing season in the spring. Our frost/freeze program began on March 15th and will continue until Thanksgiving Day or until a significant freeze occurs, whichever comes first. A significant freeze is defined as area wide temperatures of 28 degrees or colder.

So, is "winter" over for Central Alabama at last? Well, only time will tell if spring is finally here to stay.  With that said, here are some freeze facts for our four main climate locations. As you can see, freezes can still occur as late as mid April.

Note: The period of record varies among the climate sites.  For instance, records date back to the late 1800s for Birmingham and Montgomery.  On the other hand, complete records didn't begin until the 1940s at Tuscaloosa and Anniston.
