May 17, 2011 Severe Storms
Event Summary

During the evening hours of May 17, a dryline was situated across the eastern Panhandles. By the early morning hours of May 17, the dryline had retreated to the Texas and New Mexico state line, which allowed dew points in the mid 60s to lower 70s to surge westward during the late afternoon hours. As moisture increased, an upper-level disturbance approached from the southwest and ignited thunderstorms across the South Plains. The environment was supportive of severe weather with moderate elevated instability and mid-level dry air. As these storms moved northeast, they produced damaging winds up to 60 mph across Amarillo, Canyon, and Borger, resulting in downed trees and power lines.
