Livingston, AL - April 25 - 28, 2003

Description

On April 25, 2003, heavy rains fell throughout east-central Mississippi and west-central Alabama, causing extensive and extreme flooding along the Sucarnoochee River.  The flooding was most apparent at Livingston, AL, which is near the mouth of the Sucarnoochee River basin just upstream of the confluence with the Alamuchee Creek.

Upwards of 5" of precipitation fell within the Sucarnoochee River basin, with the highest amounts occurring in the Ponta Creek basin to the west of Livingston, AL.  As a result of this, the worst flooding occurred along the Sucarnoochee River downstream of it's confluence with the Ponta Creek.  This can most readily be seen by comparing the hydrographs at Porterville, MS with Livingston, AL.

As a precurser to the flooding between April 25 - 28, 2003, heavy rains and flooding also occurred between April 7 - 13, 2003.  The severity of the flooding between the two events was similar at Livingston, AL.

These two events are interesting in that they occurred in close temporal proximity to each other, and resulted in similar flood peaks and responses.  Forecasters were able to see the reaction of the Sucarnoochee River at high water levels, which aided in model calibration for future events.
