The overall synoptic regime near landfall was characterized by a ridge axis from west Texas into the Great Plains and the typical summer time Bermuda Ridge off the East coast of the United States. 

The track of Dennis was generally north to northwest across western Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico.  Heavy rain bands skirted the western Florida coast July 8^th and 9^th before making landfall on July 10^th in the Central Gulf Coast.
