Strong southeasterly flow intersected a stationary front across western sections of Virginia initially with the passage of a slowing cold front later in the period. A secondary surface wave which developed across Georgia on January 1, 2007 played a role in slowing the cold front down and keeping the focus of rain across the Dan River. These features along with upsloping moisture from the Atlantic provided for continuous rainfall across the Dan River Basin for a two day period.
