Near Major Flooding at Danville on the Dan River.

The image shows the observed stages with forecast guidance.  The significant rise at Danville was attributed to the intensity and duration of rainfall but moreover the antecedent wetness prior to the event.   Within 12 hours the River went from near 2000 cfs  (the size of a medium sized stream) to near 40,000 cfs  (about half the flow of the Ohio River at Cincinnati, Ohio for perspective).
