January 27-29, 2008 Wind, Rain and Snow Event Across New Mexico

Another storm organized off the California coast on the 25th, stalled offshore on the 26th, then began to move inland on the 27th. Subtropical moisture surged northeast ahead of the storm, bringing widespread precipitation to the western half of the state from the 27th through the 28th. Meanwhile, a second storm dropped southeast and delivered a quick burst of snow and a couple more hours of high winds late on the 28th into the early morning hours of the 29th. The water vapor satellite loop below show the progress of the first storm, as well as a second system merging with the first one.

Snow levels were high initially on the 27th, but lowered late on the 28th. Significant snows were relegated to the northwest mountains, while modest amounts fell over the Sangre De Cristo mountains and the western mountains, and light amounts over the western and central valleys. Moderate amounts of rain were found across the lower elevations of southwest New Mexico. The tables below list some of the higher snowfall and rainfall totals from this event.

Another significant impact from this storm was the wind. Strong winds howled over much of the state on the 28th into the 29th, with the strongest winds along the east slopes of the central mountains onto the eastern plains. A few reports of wind damage were received across the state. The table to the right lists some of the higher peak wind gusts observed. The combination of the wind and snow along and behind a cold front over the northern half of the state created blizzard like conditions on the evening of the 28th.
