WFO Albuquerque's Deirdre Kann, Science & Operations Officer,  and Kerry Jones, Senior Forecaster,  participated in the Middle Rio Grande Children's Water Festival that was held October 14-15, 2004 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.  Earlier in the year, Dee and Kerry participated in the Santa Fe Children’s Water Festival, which was held February 18-19, 2004 at the Sweeney Convention Center in Santa Fe. Both water festivals are organized by PioneerWest and designed for 4th and 5th grade students in the Middle Valley and Santa Fe area.

This was the 8th consecutive year that the Children's Water Festival has been held in Albuquerque and the 2nd year for Santa Fe. Both festivals span two days and together attract nearly 1000 4th and 5th graders from Santa Fe and Albuquerque Metro area schools each year.  Teachers chose among twelve different activities that focused on water resources, ecology, weather, history, geography, and our water future.  Presenters represent various agencies at the private, local, state, tribal and Federal levels.  Dee and Kerry presented flash flood safety information and conducted a mock flash flood exercise in their activity “Weather or Not.” Other activities included the popular Rolling River , Water Bugs Up Close, and Water Jeopardy.  Since 1999, over 7000 students have attended the water festivals.

At the end of the presentation students review case studies and discuss warning decisions like NWS meteorologists.

This year, we reviewed a flash flood case study along the Pecos River  in eastern New Mexico.
