Bottom Line

Remember that ordinary thunderstorms can cause flash floods given favorable hydrologic factors. To summarize, keep the following in mind:
  • NM averages 11 flash floods per year; greatest threat during July and August between 3 and 8 pm
  • Forecasters use the observation network, radars, satellites, human reports, and all other available data to detect and warn for flash floods
  • All instruments and data have limitations
  • NM’s flash floods can strike quickly in complex terrain or at long range from radar, where they are difficult to detect and where NOAA Weather Radio signals may not reach
  • Weather wise media & public can prepare for this dangerous threat and react appropriately when flash floods strike
