Dawson A. "Doc" Campbell, long time
co-op observer in Gila Hot Springs, passed away on May 11, 1998.
Dawson (DOC) Campbell was presented the "John Campanius
Holm Award" in November 1990 and the "Thomas Jefferson
Award" in October 1996. Doc's wife, Ida, and other
members of Doc's family continue to operate the co-op station at
Gila Hot Springs, which has been in existence for over 45 years.
Doc Campbell was one of the first people to settle in the Gila
Wilderness in 1919. He and his new wife began a family ranch in
1920 and that family operation continues today. |
