July 2008 was wetter than normal over most of New Mexico, while temperatures
were generally below normal.
Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms affected
much of the state on the 1st and 2nd. A few of these storms were strong
and produced
heavy rain. The storms turned severe on the 3rd with several reports
of large hail over central New Mexico. A strong downburst wind was
reported in Hagerman, while flash flooding closed some roads around Capitan.
Storms were less intense on the 4th. The summer monsoon season got cranked
up
on the 5th through 22nd, with heavy rain falling over many areas of
the state. The far northwest and southeast escaped the brunt of the heavy
rains. The 23rd through 25th saw less coverage and intensity of showers
and thunderstorms, only to increase again on the 26th and 27th as the
remnants of hurricane Dolly impacted the state. This resulting in widespread,
serious flooding in and around Ruidoso beginning during the early morning
hours of the 27th through the morning of the 28th.
